TorChat is a great web browser and an open-source messenger, you will not have to pay for. However, this being said, is it really a great messenger as well? Well, if you're worried about sending sensitive data over your computer, you need it to be encrypted and sent securely without anyone sniffing through your internet connection. Unfortunately, the free software doesn't provide this level of security.
The security issue that tomcat doesn't really address is actually a bigger concern. What about someone looking for information about a person's personal information? This could be done with any other free software, but TorChat just sends the user's identity over the internet. If a person were to use this method on their computer, what kind of person would they know to find out information about them?
On the one hand, I think it's OK to use free software. After all, people can get into trouble for trying to break into their computers. On the other hand, it's hard to trust an application or web browser you don't have the keys to. If you're not sure how to use it, I would stick to using Firefox instead. TorChat will cost you a pretty penny, so consider this before you go out and download it.
